GARSTON VETS LEAGUE
MACCABI LONDON LIONS 5 JAMROCK 1
A wet and windy Rowley Lane played host to a fine Masters game on Sunday that eventually saw Lions run out winners against a Jamrock side who more than played their part.
With the wind at their backs in the first half, Lions started very much on the front foot. Having failed to convert a couple of early chances they took a deserved lead on the quarter hour mark, Hadley Silver’s in-swinging free kick prodded home from close range by Conway at the second attempt.
With the bit between their teeth the hosts drove forward – Lee Cash hit the bar and then failed to get the vital touch sliding in at the far post. Silver, Conway, Daniel Stanton and Ben Lauffer all tried their luck but couldn’t find a way past the keeper. From there, the final 15 minutes of the half, bar one fine Pearson header that brushed the bar, saw Lions fail to make the most of the conditions.
The second period started with Jamrock looking to push Lions back, but defensively the side were outstanding, Guy Morris and Adam Harvey dominant, well supported by the returning Rob Glass and James Abrams. The latter made a superb goal-saving block, and from the pass out Lions were away on the break, the ball finding its way to Cash who literally lashed the ball from 15 yards into the roof of the net.
Still Jamrock kept up the pressure, Adam Harvey, Alex Levack and Craig Pearl combining excellently though to feed Pearson, and his thunderbolt that crashed into the net via the underside of the bar effectively secured the points.
Pearson added a fourth with a close range header before Conway added the final gloss, breaking the off side trap to run clear and slot home.
Jamrock’s efforts in the game were given some small reward with a last minute consolation goal.
