Leeds Sunday Alliance Premier Division
Leeds Maccabi 5
Republic International 1
Leeds Maccabi fired their title rivals a red-hot warning after producing a stunning five-star display.
Ian Selwyn’s men blew their opponents away with a fine opening day victory over Republic International.
Last season’s top scorer Dave Woolman grabbed a double, while Rob Selwyn, Steven Berke and an own-goal completed the rout.
It was the perfect start for Maccabi, who finished third last season after narrowly missing out on the league title.
After falling behind to a rasping 35-yard drive, Leeds moved through the gears with Woolman coolly slotting home Robert Selwyn’s through ball to level.
Just two minutes later Maccabi forged ahead as Robert Selwyn broke clear to clip past the onrushing goalkeeper.
Woolman killed off the game with ten minutes of the first half remaining, smashing home from close-range after the International defence had failed to clear a corner.
The onslaught continued after the break and Maccabi extended their lead when Charles Myers’ corner was turned into his own net by an unfortunate International defender.
Berke rounded off the scoring with a classy finish from close-range late on to seal the win and give Maccabi the perfect start.
