MACCABI LONDON LIONS A 1 FC TEAM A 2
Ben Gilbey believes 2016 could be a big year for FC Team after they registered a famous 2-1 win over high-flying Lions at Rowley Lane.
MLL's plans were hampered after Benji Weinberger fell ill, Will Beresford was injured the day before and Zac Rose forced to miss the first half, which "no doubt contributed to the standard" which they played at to start.
Team bossed the first half and apart from the heroics of Ed Bloom, no-one in a Lions shirt left the field for the break with much credit. MLL were lethargic and pedestrian. So many of the early season lessons that they thought had been learnt were forgotten as strikes from Kane Gilbery, from inside his own half, and Bar Hariely put Team in charge.
FC Team could well have been three or four goals up at half-time so MLL manager Adam Klein shuffled his pack and the hosts came out with renewed impetus for the second half.
James Gold got them back in it with a screamer from 25 yards, but they couldn’t get that elusive equaliser.
Team head coach Ben Gilbey told JC Sport: "It was a great result and a much deserved victory. Apart from their great finish out of nowhere from outside the area, we generally controlled the game, played the best football and never looked too troubled.
"We were denied what looked like a clear penalty, an open goal with an awful offside call, on top of missing a couple of one-on-ones and not capitalising on counter-attacks where we should have scored. We could have ended up with six or seven.
"We played really well on the whole and if we carry on working together improving as a team, 2016 could be a big year for FC Team A."
A MLL spokesman told JC Sport: "It's easy to point the finger of blame to other players who made mistakes but really each player should be pointing at themselves. No-one gets credit for this bad day at the office."
