Skirting the issue for summer

Jan Shure's pick of the best summer skirts

articlemain

Midi and maxi skirts are the perfect pieces for mid-summer (or “High Summer” as it’s known on Planet Fashion).
With their boho vibe and summery sensibility, midi skirts (or “midaxis” as slightly longer midis are sometimes known) are not just pretty and effortless but versatile, too: perfect for a beach holiday paired with a tee or strappy vest; for a staycation with a hoody; for the office with a blazer; for brunch with a sweatshirt or for a dinner date with lace-lavished cami plus cardi.
Maxi skirts, too offer an easy-going, summery vibe with a hippie, Ibiza sensibility, and look edgier still worn seriously voluminous and paired with a narrow-fitting, cropped or cold-shoulder top, plus super flat footwear.
Find tiered midis and maxis in exquisite florals and all kinds of prints from Dolce & Gabbana, Erdem, Zimmermann, Emilia Wickstead, Hester Bly and Loretta Caponi and at less terrifying price-points at Boden, Monsoon, Reformation, Whistles, Oliver Bonas, Joe Browns, Fatface and many others. Even M&S has a few achingly covetable skirts hidden among the, ahem, less covetable.
Find summery midis or maxis with other key details, such as asymmetric, dipped or frayed hems (at Gabriella Hearst, A.W.A.K.E Mode, Proenza Schouler, Tibi, Zadig & Voltaire, Hope Fashion, Lipsy and Saint & Sofia); with ruffles (at Ulla Johnson, Self Portrait, Hope Fashion and Zara) and in broderie at many brands and prices, including Chloe, Erdem, Alexander McQueen, Mango, Jaeger, Accessorize, and Zara.
