Why Gerald Lost His Stripes

October 02, 2008 17:35

I'm not surprised that the Jewish Chronicle's esteemed film critic has got himself into hot water over his review of "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas".

I'm sure Gerald Aaron did not go out of his way to be unkind - he never does - but this was a rare occasion when he seemed to be unaccountably wrong.

His love of the original book made him slip into a trap of which he should be more wary than most. He compared the film with the novel when he should have advised readers that the two are completely separate genres to be judged on their own merits.

Further, he forgot to suspend disbelief. Of course, in the awful world of the death camps little boys could not dig themselves in and out at will. But "Pyjamas"' hero, Bruno, in part is trying to live the fantasies of his adventure books where kids walk through walls and scamper up Everest backwards in nothing more than a t-shirt and ancient trainers. The story's terrifying denouement tells us all otherwise.

When I saw the film last weekend I found it eminently watchable and - in short bursts - to hold the same fascinating compulsion as "Schindler's List".

Sorry, Gerald. This is a must for family viewing and I commend it to the UK Jewish Film Festival for use with schools on Holocaust Day.
