I read with interest about the latest food to be deemed important enough to make it into the emoji gallery.
Apparently, the humble ball of spiced, fried mashed chickpeas follows the bagel as an emoji creation.
The Unicode Consortium, the organisation that produces the various images with which we pepper our text messages and social media posts has released a list of approved emojis that may be available on your digital device during 2019.
A complete list can be found here. There are more than 200, including what is puported to be a falafel.
As you can see, it looks more like a potato, bearing little resemblance to the savoury snack that has been eaten by Israelis and Palestinians in pillowy pitta since the 1930's.
Not only is it poorly executed but I have to wonder - do we really need a falafel emoji? I regularly use smiley faces, monkeys covering their eyes and the odd tear, but a falafel? Seems pointless to me...
