Universal Juristiction

February 02, 2010 15:01

Apparently, according to the JC, Jack Straw is acting is if 'he is the MCB's place man in Government'
Would it be preferable if he were the JC's 'place man in government?'

Why should the government change the laws of universl juristiction? Just because, rightly, Israeli politicians are falling within its scope? To change the law is to do the bidding of a foreign interest and would be 'deeply political' - exactly what the JC accuses Mr Straw's behaviour of being.

Univeral juristiction will remain in place and those who do not wish to fall under its spoltlight should respect international law.

In order for a magistrate to issue an arrest warrant he/she must be convinced of the evidence presented before them. In the case of Livni the evidence was sufficient for an independent magistrate to issue a warrant. Quite why this makes them 'unsuitable' isn't explained. Would the magistrate be 'suitable' if they did the bidding of the JC or if they were controlled by the state?

Those who presented the evidence against Livni were not from the MCB. Some were from Jewish organisations, some from christian organisations and some secular. The outrage against the massacre and siege in Gaza is not sectarian. It is not an outrage felt by Muslims only. To claim that somehow Mr Straw is doing the bidding of the MCB and that therefore the MCB is somehow 'thwarting' attempts to change the law, ignores the work of the thousands of others that support justice for Palestinians.
