Mohammed and The Jew

Zapiro's cartoon shows The Prophet on the couch, complaining to his psychiatrist that his followers have no sense of humour. Inherently, it is a Jewish perspective. The couch is standard Freudian furniture and The Prophet is receiving treatment not only devised by a Jew, but actually drawn by a Jew.

Implicit is the fact that The Prophet is unable to cope with the modern world. After all, he has paid a visit to his shrink. He is seeking a Jewish cure, and on that basis alone, it is not surprising that some South African Muslims are, consciously and subconsciously, deeply offended.

The Prophet's complaint, however, is more Jewish than Islamic, since Jews in the modern world prize humour more highly than their Muslim cousins. For Jews, humour is not only funny. It is also a survival mechanism for a people who have suffered persecution. Irony and sarcasm have become Jewish traits.

Zapiro's anti-zionism will, of course, save him from the fatwa. He is Jewish street- wise enough, to know that his consistent demonization of Israel will ensure his survival. Perhaps, only a Jew could be that cynical?
