Miss of the Day

February 05, 2009 10:55

Like any football lover, I have always been a huge fan of BBC’s coverage. I always make sure that my Sky+ is recording Match of the Day on the old series link and, for that matter, any BBC football coverage.

I remember being very frustrated and angered to learn that ITV would be broadcasting the FA Cup this year.

Last night, I was proven right as ITV made a massive blunder in missing Dan Gosling’s 118th minute winner for Everton against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round.

However, was this, the biggest mistake made by a television network? No.

I can name you one that is even worse and occurred last Sunday.

US sports fans in Arizona got a surprise when footage of American Football's Super Bowl, the world’s biggest sporting spectacle, was interrupted by a pornographic film.

Tucson-based KVOA-TV said it was “dismayed and disappointed” after some cable viewers had their match coverage disrupted towards the end of the game. Local media outlets reported that they received calls from furious viewers.

The company said the material was only seen by viewers of one cable network. The interruption happened just after the last touchdown by the Arizona Cardinals, who lost the match to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

So I suppose it could have been a lot worse for ITV…
