Since 2006, the UN Human Rights Council has released more critical reports on Israel than on the rest of the world combined, while often remaining silent on the execution and expulsion of Yazidis, Bahai, Kurds, Christians and Muslims. This week's report on last summer's Gaza war also comes from the HRC, a body so biased that the man it originally selected to oversee the investigation had been paid to work for the PLO. Israel's relatively muted response can be partly explained by this document - unlike the Goldstone Report in 2009 - at least going through the motions of looking at Hamas too, and accusing it of war crimes. But the comparison it draws between Israel and Hamas - supposedly equally guilty of such crimes - is beyond ridiculous. The IDF makes more efforts to avoid harming innocent civilians than any other armed force in the world, and rigorously investigates internal and external allegations of misconduct. By contrast, Hamas deliberately targets civilians; its response to accusations of illegal tactics by one of its number would quite possibly be to throw that person off the roof of a high building. The UN lost its credibility long ago. By comparing Hamas and Israel as if they were moral equals, it lives down to its reputation.
