The right move

It would be easy to dismiss the Charedi plan to relocate thousands of community members to Hemel Hempstead as an issue affecting only the strictly Orthodox. But the proposal to set up an affordable housing project highlights a problem faced by thousands within British Jewry. Soaring house prices have left families and young professionals unable to afford properties in the heart of the community in north-west London. The new communities in the areas of Hertfordshire bordering London are already experiencing the same challenges. By moving further afield, albeit still within the Home Counties, the Charedim have hit on a sensible solution. If schools, synagogues, mikvaot and kosher stores can be established beyond the traditional neighbourhoods, new communities could soon flourish throughout the country. Last month we focused on the resurgence of Jewish life in places such as Norfolk, the north-east and Gloucestershire. There are already self-sufficient communities operating across Britain, but facing the constant drain of young members to London, they are desperate for new members. It is time for communal organisations to follow the Charedi lead, and create a pioneering project that could reshape British Jewry for generations to come.
