Tackling abusers

Failing to cover up a plaque on the giant Chanucah in the Square menorah carrying the name of sex abuser Menachem Mendel Levy might seem a trivial ommission. But quite apart from the anguish it has caused his victim, it is symbolic of the wider failure in our community to think properly about abuse. On one level, with the Chief Rabbi leading the way, it is now widely accepted that there has been institutional failure in recognising that abuse is a problem for our community and then in dealing with it. That is all to the good. But it is almost beyond belief that not a single person among the Chanucah in the Square organisers seems to have noticed the name of a notorious sex offender on a huge plaque on the menorah designed by that same sex offender. Or, if they had noticed the name, to have acted. Almost beyond belief - because that is the point. It is all too predictable.
