Leading the way

September 18, 2014 13:01

As we near the end of one year and approach Rosh Hashannah, it's heartening to see two key community organisations putting aside the usual turf wars and petty rivalries and coming together for the greater good.

In their own different ways, both LJCC and JW3 are resounding successes. They both have large loyal audiences and are vibrant places to be around. But both face the same problem - money. It made no sense to have two large scale community and cultural centres within walking distance of each other, both chasing the same donors and much the same audience. So this is, make no mistake, a good news story.

Sense is prevailing and the new merged body will be that much more secure than the two existing organisations. All those involved deserve credit for rising above their own dominions and coming together for the greater good.

But would it be too much to hope that their example is followed by other communal organisations which do much the same job but wear different clothes? JW3 and the LJCC have shown what can be done.

Now it is down to others to follow their lead.
