Desert isle naches

December 08, 2011 11:46

An appearance on Desert Island Discs is as sure a sign of arrival into the realm of the great and the good as any MBE or OBE. And, as you listen to the musical choices of this weekend's guest, journalist Eve Pollard, you will be able to take pleasure - not to say naches - in this honour being accorded to such a personable Jewish figure.

As indeed, you could have done with astonishing frequency over these past few weeks with four out of six guests being Jewish. Advertising mogul Sir Martin Sorrell preceded Ms Pollard. Last month, Horrid Henry's creator, Francesca Simon, was followed by the theatre school founder, Anna Scher. Sir Martin - who chose the Talmud as his book - described his mother's great joy at his success, expressed by seeing "my son in the Jewish Chronicle!" All grist to the mill of the "Jewish conspiracy" theorists. Pity they can't all be packed off to a quiet desert island free of internet access.
