In May another flotilla of ships carrying aid is due to set sail for Gaza. This international flotilla will comprise of up to 15 ships.
Along with last year’s flotilla (6 ships) land convoys have recently driven from London, Delhi and Doha. The most recent comprised of 150 vehicles with activists from Italy, New Zealand, Malaysia, England and 27 other countries.
This is an amazing achievement and indicative of the feeling in civil society for the plight of the Palestinians and the injustice being perpetrated upon them.
Materials, ships, vans and aid are all raised by donations that amount to millions of dollars. Staff, drivers, ship’s crew are all volunteers. There is no media organisation backing the convoys nor are there any government agencies providing assistance. This is civil society organising and delivering on a matter of principle.
Similar to the Anti Apartheid movement the movement to bring justice for Palestine is based in civil society and is supported by peoples of many nationalities, of many faiths and of no faith. It is a truly international movement for justice.
