All About Jewish History, Culture and Genealogy

Recently, I had been scribbling away as is my wont on the JewishGen Blog ( where I serve as the Blog Coordinator. Most of what I write about there is related to Jewish history, culture, and genealogy. Many times, I write about British and Irish topics due to my family background in Manchester and Dublin.

For the past several weeks, my postings have touched on the disasters in the cycle of life of our ancestors. What made this of such fascination to me despite the somewhat maudlin topic was that the data came from the pages of The Jewish Chronicle. There, secreted away for decades was a marvelous cache of fascinating historical events relating to droughts, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other such things.

This also struck me as a special topic due to the various natural disasters in Haiti, Malaysia and Indonesia which have been in our headlines today. Reading about similar happenings in the 1800’s or earlier brought home how repetitive are the crises which impact our cycle of life.

For those of you who would like to learn more about this topic, I suggest you read my five-part series on the JewishGen Blog which can be found at the following links:

You can also strike out on your own and read about places or countries which interest you which can be found by searching in the Archives. I love trawling the Archives as I often find other topics too which I would never have found otherwise.

So, in the weeks to come, I will delve into various matters as they occur to me which touch on our Jewish heritage and the places where our families settled. Stay tuned . . .
