"You will certainly wear away, both you and this people who are with you" Exodus 18:18

I'm writing this as I approach the end of a three-month sabbatical. This time-out from my regular pastoral and congregational commitments has been immensely rewarding; not least for the opportunity to study, think and recharge. Our cyber-age of hyper-speed living comes with many technological benefits, but rarely do we get some much-needed time to switch off and reflect.

In this week's parashah there are two clear messages about the importance of pacing ourselves. The first comes from Jethro, who sees Moses working from dawn until dusk without a break. Jethro, a senior priest of the Midianites and a seasoned leader, is fearful that his son-in-law will burn out if he cannot learn to delegate. Sometimes referred to as the first management consultant, Jethro introduces Moses to the concept of a "pyramid structure", thereby enabling Moses to share his burdens and dedicate a little more time to his real priorities, including family time with Jethro's daughter and grandsons.

It is no accident that just two chapters later the Israelites receive the Ten Commandments, including the mitzvah of Shabbat. For a nation of former slaves, the concept of a day off each week must have been a gift almost beyond comprehension. Shabbat is the very antithesis of Egyptian slavery, which is why, each Friday night we recall the Exodus at kiddush.

Ahad Ha-am, the founder of cultural Zionism, is quoted as saying, "More than the Jew has kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jew." While he was clearly referring to the importance of Jewish practice for sustaining the Jewish soul, he inadvertently highlighted that having some down time each week will also maintain the Jewish body. So this Shabbat, let's make the most of our wonderful weekly window for both physical and spiritual recuperation.
