UNITED SYN.jpg

Full Time - Competitive Salary and Accommodation

Our community: At the end of February 2026, after nearly 30 years of devoted leadership, Dayan and Rebbetzin Binstock will retire. We seek an outstanding senior rabbinic couple to guide the next chapter in St John’s Wood Synagogue’s impressive 150-year history.

Located in the heart of central London, we have the largest United Synagogue community in the area. With more than 1,100 adult members, we are a diverse and growing congregation. Our shul is home to two Shabbat morning minyanim and a further Sephardi minyan within the building. Throughout the week we boast an active programme of Jewish life that spans from early childhood to lifelong learning. The building buzzes daily with activity, thanks to our educational, cultural and social calendar.

Our Nursery and Hebrew school are flourishing, our youth and young professional activities attract hundreds of participants, and we have an active and diverse welfare and social programme.

The Role:

We are looking for a visionary, engaging and empathetic rabbinic couple to lead the spiritual, educational and pastoral life of our community, and to build on our strategic priorities of:

  • Building and supporting the community
  • Empowering the next generation
  • Enriching Jewish learning and spiritual life

The ideal candidates will be:

  • Inspirational leaders, each able to connect with members of all ages and backgrounds
  • Pastoral pillars, providing non-judgmental guidance and care with empathy and discretion
  • Dynamic communicators who teach, speak and listen with warmth and clarity
  • Team players, enthusiastic about collaborating with our other Rabbinic team members, administrative staff, lay leaders, volunteers and the broader United Synagogue team and local neighbouring communities
  • Visionary educators, able to cultivate Jewish learning and identity

These are both ideally full-time positions that will challenge and stimulate the highest calibre candidates, offering the opportunity to lead one of the United Synagogue’s flagship communities at a defining moment in its history.

The United Synagogue is committed to safeguarding and promoting the safety and welfare of children and vulnerable adults. Successful applicants will be required to provide a self-disclosure once shortlisted and subject to an enhanced DBS check within the recruitment process.

For an informal and confidential conversation about the position, please contact: Michael Abraham – Chair of the Rabbinic Selection Committee: chairman@shulinthewood.com
