With the academic year starting earlier in Scotland, Calderwood Lodge Jewish Primary pupils are back at school in Glasgow, joined by a new first year intake of 23.

Another six children have entered in higher year groups, bringing the total number of pupils to 150, plus 60 in the nursery.

Around 70 per cent of pupils are Jewish and Glasgow Jewish Representative Council president Eddie Isaacs says the school's importance to local Jewish life "cannot be overstated".

Calderwood head Vanessa Thomson said the year was off to an encouraging start thanks to investment from East Renfrewshire Council.

"We've seen a substantial capital spend on the school over the summer to enhance the learning and teaching spaces. Everything's been painted and carpeted.

"Also, we asked the pupil council what they would like and at their request we now have a library."

An ongoing project being run in conjunction with the Calderwood parent council is geared towards establishing the school as a leading player in innovative IT - a further showcase for its achievements.
