Capes are odd items of clothing. They don't give you the warmth of a coat but are heavier than a jacket, plus they expose your arms to the cold. Although the cape is probably high up on the list of impractical fashion, their style and elegance, still makes them desirable.

This is not a versatile piece of clothing but it's rare in fashion that usefulness is a criteria that designers consider. One must also remember there's also only a small window of time that capes can be worn in Britain without feeling anything but uncomfortably chilly.

With this in mind, I urge you to shop sensibly and pay a minimal amount for a cape. I'm not saying do away with style or cut, just don't go spending your winter coat allowance on an item that has no sleeves! There's only so much warmth a pair of long woolly gloves can give you.

One should also note this is not a trend to be worn by anyone shorter than five foot - even with heels. Because of their triangular cut, capes rely on the wearer's height to ensure their unique shape flatters your body. Although you will most definitely have "arm draught", on the brighter side rears will be covered, and belted capes (of which there are many) nip in waists and help keep the cold out ever so slightly.

The high street has some great versions that hit all the right spots, but buy your cape now, before the winter really sets in.
