Match point

There's no etiquette as such for dressing to watch tennis, but with white being the summer shade and sport being such an influence in today's fashion, it's no surprise there's a whisper of a dress code in the stands.

Tailored yet relaxed separates are a popular choice. Flirty pleated skirts and white trousers (not jeans!) cabled sweaters, shirt dresses and racquet-adorned jewellery will ensure you stand out with style. Team with sun-shielding hats, large sunglasses and a white handbag to preserve your cool while you cheer from the sidelines.

Foot wise you can't go too wrong as you'll be sitting down most of the time. But squeaky-clean plimsolls or a summer espadrille are best. Avoid too much of a heel as you'll struggle to climb up and down the grandstand balancing on a high stiletto.

If you're one of the lucky ones to have Centre Court tickets, the general rule is to smarten up. It's like the Rolls Royce of courts and everyone is notably more polished. A shirtdress ticks all the boxes for comfort and style.

As for cover-ups, don't forget to bring a jacket for the evening chill. The temperature can dramatically drop as play continues into the evening. A striped blazer or a relaxed jacket can be elegant but seasonal too. With white being the colour choice for players and spectators alike, just avoid the strawberries and stick to the cream!
