In the trenches

articlemain

Originally designed for soldiers to protect them against wind and rain in the early 20th century and during World War 1, the trench coat has now become a wardrobe staple of fashion and culture for both men and women. (2014 marks more than 100 years of the ever-so-popular Burberry trench).

This season, designers are taking a practical approach to summer coats with the focus on trenches and waterproofs. The latest designs have had a face-lift, including all the trimmings- zips, drawstrings, leather sleeves, bows- the list is endless, as is the look. Sporty and urban designs are very popular this spring as is smart and feminine finishes.

Long gone are the days of our choice being restricted to a simple beige or khaki, colour-rich designs in vibrant hues ensure your cover-up adds some pop to any outfit you wear it with.

The real beauty of a trench coat is its ability to go with any outfit; it can take you from day to evening and can be worn with both casual and smart clothing underneath. The perfect overcoat.

Don't be tempted by high-fashion designs that are too trend-led as these will date quickly. A trench should be a timeless piece that lasts year on year.; the fashion staple that keeps on giving.
