Get shirty

articlemain

We are as surprised as you, but very pleasantly so. The shirt is having a comeback on the fashion scene with chiffons, cottons, florals, and ruffles galore creeping back into our wardrobes. The contemporary feel is one that is less work and more play, with fabrics sheerer than the classic Anne Fontaine whites and designs bolder and more interesting than ever before.

Like most other clothes, ruffles are everywhere and a shirt is an effortless and easy option to tap into the trend without looking too "cha-cha-cha" princess-like. It's a simple closet staple but Instagrammers worldwide are posting selfies with their shirts worn backwards - a trend that generally only suits fashion or art students - but it does work.

Florals and fun animal prints make a welcome change to the usual plain hues worn under business suits, while bow accents tied around necks are hugely popular and will continue to be into next season too. Thanks Gucci!

A shirt always looks great on a woman because of the strong element of masculinity attached to it. Wearing a sharp shirt with a stiff collar sends off meeting room vibes and oozes confidence, while a relaxed shirt has always made weekend dressing a breeze. Team your oversized shirt with ripped jeans, under dungarees or tucked into a denim midi skirt for a western cowgirl feel. Just don't add the boots too.

Now is the perfect time to invest in a shirt. They make a great transitional piece when the weather turns cooler or you simply need an extra layer on top of a strap. Tie around your waist or shoulders for easy access.

The real key, however, is to give your shirt a modern touch, so whether you change the buttons or simply wear differently than the norm, make a statement.
