Back to school

articlemain

Welcome back folks. Holidays seem a dream away while school bags, packed lunches and excited schoolchildren get ready for a new year of learning and fun. For us mums, it's not all about Clarks school shoes and a fresh stock of school uniform. It's about showing off your summer glow and looking fresh rather than knackered after the break (I use the word 'break' very loosely!)

With a chill in the air and transitional dressing well and truly upon us, invest in clothing that can be seen on the outside rather than the inside. Top of your list, should be a light Mac or the new cardi-coat shapes that can be thrown over trousers or skirts and perfect for chilly days when the sun still shines.

Choose muted colours that match with almost everything but beware of beiges that can mark easily and be a pain to remove. Any mum will tell you, dark shades are your best friends throughout your "mummy" years. Stick to fabrics and colours that, if marked , can be easily undone with a handy baby wipe or slung in the wash.

Next, invest in some flat or low-heeled ankle boots that you can walk and run in and guarantee blister-free feet. While it's not yet the height of winter, enjoy suede fabrics and tactile textures that are best kept for dry days. Alternatively, enjoy the last few weeks of slipping bare feet into flat pumps.

To complete your look, treat yourself to a new bag. If you begin wearing it now, it can without doubt be regarded as an investment buy, no matter the cost. For handbag candy, head to Michael Kors and Mulberry for head-turning designs in reds, greys and burgundy's. Slouchy oversized tote bags and smart rucksacks make a comeback this season and are the practical choice for office and family days-out. Alternatively choose a smaller structured and textured bag - less practical but undeniably beautiful to wear.
