A day a the races

articlemain

It reads like a notice from your shul newsletter, though on closer inspection it is in fact the style guide to dressing for next week's Royal Ascot. Modest dressing is a must: a glimpse of a bare midriff, too much cleavage or flash of shoulder will get you ushered out within seconds of arriving at the race course. And rightly so!

Dressing up for the races has always been an occasion to put on your best, a bit similar to how theatre visits used to be, but are sadly no more. It's the perfect excuse to glam up from head-to-toe with headgear being the most important and talked-about factor. Last year there was a big fuss when even fanciful fascinators were no longer allowed within the Royal Enclosure. Wide-brimmed and Gigi-esque designs are the way forward. According to the organisers of the 305-year-old event, the average race-goer spends £300 on their outfit, though if it's head-turning looks you're after, that £300 can easily be spent on the hat alone!

The rules of dressing are historically strict, but, surprisingly, trousers, and even jumpsuits, have had the seal of approval. It's clear that fashion trends are having a knock-on effect when it comes to the sartorial rulebook, although dresses still seem to be the popular choice and especially floral ensembles.

Royal Ascot is considered by many to be the start of summer's social calendar. So, it's officially time to embrace the new season. If nothing else, tear yourself away from your beloved coloured hosiery and let your limbs see the light, just check the invite so you're not breaking the rules. And if you're still uncertain what to wear, grab a DSA (desperately seeking attention) hat and you'll instantly be holding the style trophy.
