UJS hails 'milestone' in its work 'empowering Jewish women in leadership'

For the first time in the almost 100-year history of the Union of Jewish Students (UJS), all the candidates to be its next president are women.

Lauren Keiles, Esther Offenberg and Joanna Phillips are vying to succeed Hannah Rose to lead the union, which represents 8,500 students at around 60 UK universities, in the 2019-20 academic year.

Ms Rose said called the all-female shortlist a "a milestone in UJS’ work in empowering Jewish women in leadership, and a testament to the growing UJS role in pushing the Jewish community forwards on gender equality and broader diversity and inclusion".

She said: “It is incredibly positive that for the first time in UJS’ 100 year history, all the Presidential candidates in a contested election are impressive leaders who are also women...

"Coming from Bath, Birmingham and Leeds; demonstrating a passion for interfaith, social justice and education; and expressing Orthodox and Progressive Jewish identities, this range of candidates also illustrate the variety and vibrancy of Jewish campus life.”
