Sundance Film Festival: London returns to Picturehouse Central on 1-4 June. It features 14 UK film premieres - and 15 shorts - from the 2017 edition of the renowned Robert Redford founded Sundance Film Festival, which takes place annually in January, in Park City, Utah, USA.
Films include the Judd Apatow produced romcom, The Big Sick, which is based on the true story of the film’s writers (and real life couple), Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani. Pakistan-born comedian, Kumail Nanjiani and American grad student, Emily (Zoe Kazan) fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail must navigate the crisis with her parents and the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.
Politics and sports collide in director Bryan Fogel’s investigative documentary, Icarus. When Fogel, an amateur cyclist, sets out to uncover the truth about doping in sports, a chance meeting with a Russian scientist transforms his story from a personal experiment to one that exposes one of the biggest scandals in sports history.
The programme also includes “Redford Recommends.” These are three influential films - personally selected by Robert Redford - that have premiered at Sundance in the past and which he believes demonstrate the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival’s legacy of nurturing and discovering filmmaking talent. One of these chosen films is the award-winning documentary, Man on Wire, produced by Simon Chinn, which will be screened in its original 35mm format.
