Volunteers from teenagers to near centenarians were honoured at a ceremony at JW3's Finchley Road premises on Monday.

The Wohl/Jewish Volunteering Network awards recognise "the enormous range of volunteering roles in the Jewish community".

Among the winners was Leora Robinson, 18, who volunteers at the Edinburgh House home for the aged in Wembley and with young Norwood clients with disabilities. She said she was inspired to volunteer by visiting her grandfather at Edinburgh House.

"Over time I got to know other residents and I liked to chat with them as well. My experience has shown me that you gain so much from volunteering." She intends to continue volunteering while at university and wants to encourage other young people to do so.

At the other end of the age spectrum, 98-year-old Stella Lucas - founder of the All Aboard charity shops and a pioneer of activities for United Synagogue women - was "truly humbled" to receive the award for lifetime achievement.

The Wohl Foundation Volunteer of the Year was shared by Hannah Manson - who has volunteered in London and Manchester - and Ruth Barnett, a Kindertransport refugee who has campaigned for human rights and against discrimination.

Close on 200 people attended and the evening was compered by former newsreader Martyn Lewis, chairman of the National Council of Volunteering Organisations. He was "delighted to see how many young people are being honoured. The future of volunteering is safe in their hands." He added that the range of JVN volunteers was "truly awesome".
