Top cast at Cambridge Limmud

articlemain

One of Israel’s most famous literary figures, playwright Joshua Sobol, will be among the cast of top-class speakers at Cambridge Limmud on Sunday week.

At least 600 visitors are expected to attend the city’s fourth Limmud, which takes place at Anglia Ruskin University. Professor Simon Goldhill, the event’s programming chairman, said: “In intellectual terms, it is one of the biggest single-day Jewish events in the community.”

Joshua Sobol is best known here for the National Theatre’s production of his Holocaust play, Ghetto. Other speakers include Edmund de Waal, the author of the best-selling memoir The Hare with Amber Eyes and octogenarian literary critic George Steiner, who has in the past been outspoken on Israel and Jewish affairs.

Another guest is leading Jewish studies scholar, Daniel Boyarin, from the United States, an expert on Talmud. “Because we can get in big audiences, we are able to fly in people from California,” Professor Goldhill said.

The programme also includes a conversation between Football Association cardiologist Len Shapiro and Anthony Clavane, the author of the book on Jews and football, Does Your Rabbi Know You’re Here?.
