World renowned violinist Maxim Vengerov played a supporting role when he performed at Belsize Square Synagogue in north London last week.

Mr Vengerov delighted congregants by appearing at a concert showcasing 18-year-old Canadian piano prodigy Alice Burla, hailed as an “extraordinary talent” by the New York Times. It was part of the shul’s mission to back talented young Jewish musicians,

One of the youngest to study at New York’s famous Juilliard School, she has already played at a number of famous concert venues.

Shul music committee chair Philip Keller said the concert was a product of the 20-year friendship between Mr Vengerov and Belsize Square rabbi Stuart Altshuler.

The violinist had met Ms Burla a few years ago and had been keen to bring her to London ever since, particularly in such an intimate venue. There was also a past generational link between their families in Russia.

The concert — Ms Burla’s UK debut — had been “a real thrill” for the capacity 220 audience, Mr Keller added.

The proceeds would help fund her musical studies in Spain and the Belsize Square musical programme, “which is in keeping with the musical traditions of the synagogue”.
