articlemain

Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid hosted Holocaust survivors at a private dinner at 11 Downing Street in appreciation of their dedication to Shoah education.

Thanking them for continuing to share their testimonies with the young generation, Mr Javid said: “We must never forget what happens when ignorance and hatred are left unchecked.

"I pay tribute to the tireless effort of the Holocaust survivors who continue to tell their important story.

“I’ve had the honour of meeting many of them before and I thank them on behalf of our country for helping us ensure that history is never forgotten.”

His guests, including Harry Spiro, Sir Ben Helfgott  and Kitty Hart-Moxon, regularly address groups in schools and colleges.

Mr Spiro said he was grateful to Mr Javid “for his enormous commitment to Holocaust education and ensuring the testimony of survivors like myself live on.

“The Chancellor has always shown such a keen interest in our efforts to educate as many young people as possible. With his support, we have been able to reach even more people and hopefully, eventually, we will successfully overcome this terrible hatred.”

The Holocaust Educational Trust described Mr Javid as “a longstanding friend”.

He visited Auschwitz-Birkenau on the HET’s Lessons from Auschwitz scheme in 2011, secured funding for Lessons from Auschwitz Universities and has addressed a number of the trust’s events.
