Manchester's longest running kosher restaurant is back in business following a voluntary liquidation.

JS Restaurant owner Michael Issler reopened the premises on Wednesday after a financial restructuring. Signs on the doors informed customers that the two-floor premises were undergoing refurbishment, which took place during a mandatory closure period.

Mr Issler - who took over the business in 2006 - said it had been hit by rising kosher food prices and fewer people dining out in difficult financial times.

The JS originally opened in Prestwich in 1956 and Mr Issler described it as an asset to the community. "The financial climate is very hard and food costs have become increasingly expensive," he said. "We have had to close for financial and logistical restructuring in order to protect the restaurant and the service we offer."

Manchester Beth Din said its kashrut supervision of JS remained in place.
