Lottery cash preserves vital Shoah legacy

articlemain

A Shoah legacy project bankrolled with £146,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund is training a new generation to disseminate the testimony of survivors.

The Leeds-based Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association is halfway through the two-year scheme, which is also exploring and recording survivors’ stories.

Reporting to its annual meeting, HSFA chair Lilian Black reported that prisoner record cards, transport lists and documents relating to liberation and post-war settlement were among supportive material collected.

The association’s educational work was continuing to grow as “the need to promote human rights for all and help young people and adults to understand the impact of scapegoating, stereotyping and all forms of persecution is more important than ever”.

In 2012, HSFA survivors addressed more than 15,000 young people and adults in schools, colleges, universities and other settings. Their efforts were “truly amazing”, Mrs Black said.

Local Jewish representative council president Hilton Lorie felt honoured to have the HSFA in Leeds.
“The vibrancy of the organisation is tremendous, combining aspects both social and educational. It is very humbling to be in your presence,” Mr Lorie said.
