Special needs educator Langdon College has set up an online printing business after receiving a £25,000 grant.

The Salford-based college has created a printing centre, complete with computer design suites, large format printer and equipment for branding fabrics and ceramics. Named the Karten Centre after the charitable trust which provided the funding, it will serve as a work-training facility for students to gain supported employment skills. It will also sell through an online store whose proceeds will swell the college coffers.

“We can print posters and banners in any size, T-shirts, mugs, stationery, even flip-flops — you name it,” said the centre’s manager, Paul Muldoon.

As the print shop has the facility to print on wax, one idea is for the college to sell branded Shabbat candles in kosher shops.

Langdon principal Chris Mayho said small businesses would be canvassed for printing work, in addition to orders for barmitzvah invitations and greeting cards from community members.

“The centre is part of our Team Enterprise programme so all students, regardless of their disabilities, can acquire skills and knowledge they wouldn’t be able to access elsewhere.”
