Housing is hot hustings topic

articlemain

The Leeds Jewish Housing Association chair has warned a Tory general election candidate that the Conservatives' commitment to giving housing association tenants the right to buy would be "the death knell for small housing associations".

Kate Pearlman-Shaw challenged Leeds North East hopeful Simon Wilson at a hustings meeting hosted by the Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue and attended by more than 150 Jewish community members. Mr Wilson acknowledged that the policy required further thought and said he would support an exemption for faith-based associations.

Fabian Hamilton, who is defending Leeds North East for Labour, said his party had demonstrated its commitment to British Jewry by establishing Holocaust Memorial Day.

Ukip's Warren Hendon said its election manifesto demonstrated "unequivocal" backing for religious slaughter. Liberal Democrat and Green candidates also took part in the event.

Challenged by a Board of Deputies representative to commit to joining their respective Friends of Israel groups - and, if elected, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Jews - all pledged that they would, except for the Greens' Martin Hemingway, who said "he was not a joiner".
