The new mayor of Barnet, Mark Shooter, has said his main objective will be engaging disenfranchised citizens in communal activities.

Mr Shooter, a Barnet councillor of five years who at 44 is believed to be the youngest to take the position, told the JC he hoped to "inspire younger people and other parts of the community which aren't involved in civic society".

Speaking after his inauguration, the father-of-five and former Hasmonean student, said: "Barnet is the largest borough in London, so it's a tremendous responsibility on my shoulders.

"It's amazing. I'm loving every moment of it so far, looking forward to bringing everyone in the community together and making it as cohesive as possible."

He identified Chai Cancer Care as one of his chosen charities for the year, saying that the organisation, whose headquarters are in Hendon - the ward he represents - is "a special charity which provides incredible respite services".

Cllr Shooter worked as a trader on the future exchange market LIFFE, and was working in property when he decided to become a Conservative councillor.

He lives in Hendon with his wife Melissa and family and splits his shul time between Hendon Synagogue, Toras Chaim and Ner Yisrael shuls.
