After her five-year-old daughter Shani died following complications from open heart surgery in February 2017, Juliet Berman, and her husband Simon, set up Shine for Shani, to raise money in her memory.

More than £20,000 was raised to be split between Great Ormond Street Hospital (Gosh) and Cancer Research UK.

But Mrs Berman also wanted to support others going through similar situations. And in association with Gosh, she has established A Brighter Future Fund, connected to Shine for Shani, giving loved ones of a deceased child the opportunity to do something in their memory.

Mrs Berman, a Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue member, hopes to raise £70,000 over the next few years for medical research, equipment and technology.

Towards this target, a 12-hour football event is being held this Sunday at Watford Powerleague. The non-players can enjoy arts and crafts and a bake sale and the goal is to raise £10,000.

“We have more events happening next year - a walking challenge and some other family-oriented projects.” 

Her daughter Tammy is also doing her bit in memory of Shani. “She is writing a poetry book for her batmitzvah that is tied in to everything that’s happened to her."
