The Federation of Synagogues Beth Din has issued a new licence to the Met Su Yan kosher restaurant in Golders Green, to take effect two days after the withdrawal of the previous one.

A notice sent out on behalf of the Federation on Friday announced that “after the implementation of important changes, including significant staff replacements, a kosher licence has been issued to Met Su Yan”, valid from Sunday July 14.

In today's print edition, the JC reported that the Federation had decided to withdraw its licence from the restaurant, claiming that staff had “created an attitude and an atmosphere that made it difficult for the Beth Din mashgichim and shomrim [kashrut observers] to carry out their supervisory duties”. On Wednesday, as the JC went to press, Dayan Lichtenstein, head of the Beth Din, told the paper that no agreement had been reached on any deal which would allow the restaurant to retain its kashrut certificate.

Additionally, the JC ran an advert from the Federation informing customers that the licence was being withdrawn, as of July 12, from the Chinese restaurant, but that the Edgware branch of Met Su Yan was unaffected, being under different ownership.

Speaking to the JC earlier this week, a spokesman for the restaurant stressed that “nothing treif has been sold, chas vshalom [God forbid]”, saying that the issue had been “a disciplinary matter”.
