Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham told Sunday’s Board of Deputies meeting that he hoped the Labour Party had finally recognised the need to tackle antisemitism decisively.

“It is inconceivable to me that a party which has prided itself on its record on racism could have become in embroiled in an antisemitism crisis,” the former Labour Minister told the gathering at Manchester Town Hall.

“Racism needs to be dealt with firmly, quickly and decisively. I’m afraid that this hasn’t been the response so far.”

In response to an audience question, Mr Burnham added that while Jeremy Corbyn retained his backing, “that support is not unconditional or unchallenged”.

The meeting was part of the Board’s annual regional weekend, held this year in Manchester in celebration of the centenary of the local Jewish representative council.

Deputies were Friday night dinner guests at Prestwich Hebrew Congregation, where they were addressed by Bury Mayor Councillor Jane Black.

Board leaders spoke at Manchester shuls on Shabbat morning. They included president Marie van der Zyl, who later reflected on a “vibrant Jewish community.

“[It] is hugely respected throughout the city and the strength of its institutions is a matter of great pride.”
