Norwood paid tribute to the stars of its volunteer army at an awards night at Allianz Park, Hendon, attended by more than 200 people.

“Our volunteers make that vital difference, improving the quality of life for thousands of people,” awards chair Rachael Davis-Stollar told them. “Their selfless contribution enables us to support vulnerable children and their families, children with special educational needs and adults with learning disabilities and autism.” Their roles range from working in Norwood’s charity shops to befriending and mentoring.

Marilyn Graham, a befriender for more than 20 years, received a special commendation award from Lady Mendelsohn, Norwood’s co-president.

“Our wonderful befrienders help improve confidence in those who use our services, reduce isolation, and often take pressure off families just by being there,” Lady Mendelsohn pointed out.

“There is certainly a growing need for befriending. Norwood has survived for over 200 years because we are responsive and forward thinking. This is a service we want to grow even more because it has such an impact.”

Among other award winners were Sophie Goligorsky (young volunteer); Flora Frank and the Toy Sweep committee (fundraising) and Bernice Silverman and Zeina Karouni (outstanding contribution).
