Synagogue ran four summer schemes including an innovative 'tech camp'

Not content with running just one holiday scheme this summer, Finchley Reform Synagogue catered for four distinct groups within its extended community, including a brand new one which focussed on technology.

The synagogue continued with its ever popular annual summer scheme for younger members, while children in Belarus also benefitted from a scheme run by its young adults under the auspices of The Together Plan. It grew out of the community's partnership with its twinned community in Polotsk.

The third project moved away from the Jewish community with a team of young adults delivering a residential experience for disadvantaged young people from Hackney through the the Summer Hype programme.

The fourth, and brand new camp, its first ever Tech Camp. reached out to the synagogue's youth in what is describes as "an innovative way for any synagogue in the UK."

The camp, aimed at children aged between nine and 13, consisted of three full days using Kanos, laptops and Codebugs to make games, build robots and hack Minecraft. It was run in conjunction with ORT UK and Jewish Interactive.

Rachel Fidler, Youth and Education Manager at FRS, says she wanted to create a camp to suit children who don’t always fit the usual youth movement mould.

“FRS is all about gateways; involving members at any stage of their lives in a way that will engage them and let them know they are a valued part of the community," she continued.

Adam Overlander-Kaye, Chief Executive of ORT UK, added, "As a charity that supports STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) education projects at schools across the world, ORT UK was excited to partner with FRS and Jewish Interactive to bring coding and programming to young people in a fun and safe environment.

"Science and Technology education is key to enabling young people to thrive in the 21st century."
