Spy network unearthed in Kenton

articlemain

Kenton Synagogue ladies guild held a luncheon with guest of honour, historian and authoress Helen Fry. Co-chair Lynn Stock welcomed the 100-plus guests to enjoy a delicious meal before introducing Dr Fry whose talk was entitled “Spying on Hitler’s Army”. Dr Fry explained how Colonel Thomas Kendrick, head of intelligence, used Trent Park, the former home of Sir Philip Sassoon, as a prisoner of war centre. Trent Park housed 59 German generals and their entourage and was run along the lines of a gentlemen’s club. The generals never realised that Trent Park was also housing the “secret listeners” and the work of these spies helped to hasten the end of the war in much the same way as those working at Bletchley Park. Dr Fry stressed that Kendrick and his team had been an important part of Jewish and national history. Joint co-chair, Marlene Knepler gave the vote of thanks.
