York hosted the first combined service of Northern Jewish communities, and attracted 120 people from as far afield as Cumbria, Northumbria, Nottingham, Durham and Manchester.

Danny Rich, Liberal Judaism’s senior rabbi, told them of the movement’s intention to establish a Northern Communities Alliance comprising Durham, Edinburgh, Lancashire and Lakes, Lincoln, Manchester and York.

He envisioned the Alliance holding events and conferences and sharing knowledge, skills and resources. There would be professional support for fundraising.

The service was led by Rabbi Tanya Sakhnovich (Nottingham), student minister Deborah Blausten (York) and Rabbi Robert Ash (Lancashire and Lakes).

Ben Rich, chair of the York community, said: “This was one of the largest Liberal Jewish gatherings in the country this weekend.

“What an amazing thought that it took place in York, where less than three years ago there was no community.

“Because of its inclusivity and openness to all, Liberal Judaism is truly on the march in the north of England.”
