Mirvis goes down a storm in Aberdeen

articlemain

Britain’s most northerly synagogue welcomed Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis during his Scottish visit this week.

Rabbi Mirvis spent two hours with 45 members and friends of Aberdeen Hebrew Congregation, chatting to them individually after giving a short talk.

“He took on board that Aberdeen is a unique community,” said the shul’s Debby Taylor. “There are not Aberdonian Jews. They come to work in the oil industry, or to the university, for a few years. They are truly the wandering Jews.”

Community members signed a copy of Scots Jews, the book by photographer Judah Passow, which was presented to Rabbi Mirvis by Ross Glezer, Aberdeen’s most recent barmitzvah boy, and his sister Evie.

On Monday afternoon, Rabbi Mirvis met students at the St Andrews University campus, who were given Chaplaincy-sponsored Pesach survival kits including a Seder plate, matzah, grape juice and sweets.
