Harrogate Synagogue is experiencing a growth in membership, vice-president Roma Cohen told its AGM.

But equally important, she said, was that existing members were attending services on a regular basis.

“This is exactly what we need — people to be part of the community, not just members without any active role.

“We continue to be proud of our welcoming ways. Our success is being talked about around Leeds shuls.

“I am delighted that our warm, friendly and welcoming community is thriving.”

In April, the 200-member shul held its centenary celebrations, which the Chief Rabbi attended. Feedback from congregants and guests had been “overwhelmingly complimentary”, Mrs Cohen said.

Although the shul does not have a rabbi, a diverse roster of guest ministers conduct services.

Mrs Cohen urged Shabbat regulars to invite friends to services to experience the welcoming atmosphere. “This is how we build up our membership.” In November, her son Hayden will be married in the shul, its first chupah in 20 years.
