Giving it all away

November 24, 2016 23:00

We make no apology for writing more or less the same leader at this time every year. Because every year the same thing demands to be said.

As a community, our philanthropic giving is breathtaking. On Monday, in one night, Jewish Care raised a scarcely believable £4.2 million. From one dinner. Almost all the larger charities hold successful fundraising dinners which also raise astonishing sums.

And there are a plethora of other organisations which find ways to draw on what sometimes seems the unlimited generosity of our community. We should never take this for granted. This week, for instance, we highlight Richard Desmond's involvement with World Jewish Relief, one of a number of charities he supports for no reason other than altruism.

Similarly, were it not for Dame Vivien Duffield's philanthropy, the soon-to-be-opened JW3 - the Jewish Community Centre for London - would not exist. We could fill entire issues of the JC with charitable events, so widely and deeply are they entrenched within our community. And that pinpoints the real message: that this really has nothing to do with wealth. Rich and poor, young and old, tzedakah is honoured within our religion - and we prove it every day of the year.
