Multicoloured Kit Kats - eat a rainbow in Japan

The humble Kit Kat is a superstar in Japan, where you can buy them in a rainbow of flavours

Mr Fresser's friend, Big T, lives in Japan.

Big T - not his actual monicker, but to preserve his identity - visited Mr Fresser and I to celebrate Mr Fresser's big 'five oh'. He came bearing gifts. Very special gifts.

A pair of Japanese chef's knives for me. (Swoon)

And for Mr Fresser and the mini Fressers, a bag of Kit Kats like we've never seen. Kit Kat is, as the song goes — big in Japan.

Entire stores are dedicated to them. The shops - Kit Kat Chocolatory - sell a range of different flavours and colours designed by famous Japanese chef, Yasumasa Tagaki. The treat, which is as pedestrian as they come in our neck of the woods has been elevated to a sought-after confection.

Apparently, the name can be construed as Kitto Katsu, which means 'you will surely win' in Japanese, so people give them as lucky charms for students about to take exams. (I gleaned this fact from Wikipedia, so perhaps take that with a pinch of matcha powder.)

Big T brought us a selection that includes a selection of fruity flavours (see below); green tea; maple strawberry; pistachio and raspberry and pistachio and grapefruit.

I won't let anyone touch them far less actually eat them. They are too pretty. Perhaps I should be doling them out to the primary school children taking their SAT's this week, or to those about to take other, more life-changing examinations.
