Israel's record-breaking hummus

By Jessica Elgot, January 11, 2010

Israel has regained the world record for making the largest bowl of hummus, doubling a Lebanese record less than three months ago.

More than 50 chefs, both Arab and Jewish, from Abu Gosh made 8,800 pounds of hummus, which was three and a half metres across and made in a broadcast dish from the local television station.

The chefs used more than two tons of chickpeas, one and a half tons of sesame paste and hundreds of lemons, garlic cloves and litres of olive oil.

But chefs had to work fast to make sure the hummus remained edible, as the delicious paste goes off quickly in the warm weather.
