Egypt's newly restored synagogue

In Cairo’s ancient Jewish quarter, the ruined Ben Maimon synagogue has undergone a seven month restoration.

The synagogue held a dedication ceremony last week, amid a heavy security presence which cleared a 500 metre area around the shul.

The dedication ceremony included several Egyptian Jewish families, Carmen Weinstein, head of Egypt's Jewish community, Yitzhak Levanon, the newly-appointed Israeli ambassador to Egypt and the US, Canadian and French envoys.

Iranian protesters disrupt Galloway

Supporters of the Gaza protesters jailed for violence outside the Israeli embassy held a meeting at Parliament last night calling for their release.

During the meeting, as Mr Galloway discussed alleged Metropolitan Police brutality during the Gaza protests, two Iranian students confronted him over his involvement with Iran, in connection with his regular appearance on Iranian TV channel Press TV.

The two men were removed from the building by the police.

Manchester Uni anti-Israel protest

Two CST security staff were reportedly injured in scuffles as Manchester University students protested against the intended visit of Israeli deputy ambassador Talya Lador-Fresher.

Ms Lador-Fresher was due to speak to the politics society of Manchester University Students Union. But after 300 protesters were expected to turn out, organised by another student society Action Palestine, the embassy cancelled her visit.

CCTV of Hamas murder in Dubai

Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was found suffocated in his hotel room in Dubai.

CCTV footage released of the assassination shows the assassins following him in the elevator and checking into a room across the hall.

Four of the assassins broke into his room while he was out and pounced on his return.

Dubai has allegedly told Hamas to steer clear of the investigation but Hamas has opened its own investigation with help for Syria and Iran. Hamas would not confirm that Mr al-Mabhouh had been en-route to Iran.

Oxford students attack Danny Ayalon

Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister was met by a protester screaming “slaughter the Jews” as he spoke at the Oxford Union.

Antisemitic and anti-Israel abuse was shouted throughout Danny Ayalon’s speech on Monday evening, with students causing numerous disruptions to the event.

During the hour-long session one student ran towards Mr Ayalon shouting the Arabic phrase “Itbah Al-Yahud” [Slaughter the Jews].

As many as 10 others, carrying Palestinian flags, made attempts to attack Mr Ayalon but were intercepted and removed by security.

U2's Bono sings at New York shul

Rock star Bono has made an unlikely appearance at Park East Synagogue in New York after being invited by Rabbi Schneier.

The two men met while working for the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, an interfaith partnership founded by Rabbi Schneier in 1965. The foundation works closely on the same issues as Bono's ONE Foundation, on issues like international poverty and HIV.

Bono, wearing a white kippah, was greeted by congregants singing 'Shalom Aleichem' as he entered the syngogue.
