Nick Griffin challenged over BNP violence

BNP leader Nick Griffin was confronted by Searchlight editor and Hope Not Hate activist Nick Lowles over an incident where a BNP councillor was seen brwling with three Asian men.

The BNP have suffered a thrashing at the hands of the electorate, despite fears that the extreme rightwing party would gain a seat in Parliament after their success in the European elections.

Mr Griffin came in third in Barking, after a bitter campaign which saw volunteers and anti-racist activists come out to campaign for his Labour opponent, Margaret Hodge.

Hillary Clinton addresses the AJC

The US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has restated the US’s firm commitment to Israel’s security and has warned Iran and Syria against supplying weapons to Gaza and Hizbollah.

In a speech to the American Jewish Committee, Mrs Clinton underlined her commitment to peace in the region, and condemned the transfer of weapons from Syria to terrorists in Gaza and to Hizbollah in Lebanon.

President Shimon Peres led senior members of the Israeli government, including Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in a rousing chorus of Yom Ha’atzmaut songs during the celebrations at his home.

The special celebration was attended by Mr Netanyahu, Defence Minister Ehud Barak and Gabi Ashkenazi, the army chief of staff.

The songs were specially selected by each of the leaders. They entertained a crowd of 120 “outstanding” IDF soldiers, IDF and Palmach veterans.

Yom HaShoah memorial in Hyde Park

The Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks and Holocaust survivors took part in a candle lighting ceremony on Sunday in Hyde Park to remember the Holocaust.

Survivors and their children and grandchildren lit candles to remember those who were murdered in the Holocaust at the event to mark Yom Hashoah.

The shofar was sounded and a minute's silence was observed.

David Miliband accuses Israel of forging passports

The Foreign Secretary David Miliband has declared his disappointment with Israel in a statement to the House of Commons in which he accused Israel of faking British passports and confirmed he had expelled an Israeli diplomat.

Based on the sophistication of the technique used to clone the passports, Mr Miliband said: “The government judges it is highly likely that the forgeries were made by a state intelligence service.”

He said that the fact that the UK considers Israel a close ally “was adding insult to injury”.
